Dean's Gift Book of Fairy Tales

Dean's Gift Book of Fairy Tales,
illustrated by Janet & Anne Grahame Johnstone.
Dean & Son, LTD., 1967.

Finally, I have seen this book in person! I have read about it and seen a few pictures, but it wasn't the same. Dean is a British publisher, and their lovely children's books are not readily available in the middle of the U.S. Fortunately, inter-library loan exists, and a beautiful copy arrived from somewhere in Illinois.

The Johnstone twins are best-known here for illustrating Dodie Smith's The One Hundred and One Dalmatians and its sequel. Those black and white illustrations are cute and fun, but I'm loving their full color fairy tale art.

The pictures look as if they are glowing. That quality caught the eye of the librarian at the desk that night, and we paged through the book, oohing and ahhing together before I brought it home!

  1. I love these illustrations!! I have the ABC book they illustrated and the pictures are so opulent and vibrant. Love it!

    1. They look like they're glowing, as if the pages are lit from within. So beautiful.

  2. I had this book as a very young girl. It got handed down to family friends with younger kids, and I never really wanted it to go. I loved it dearly. As soon as there was an Internet to search, I looked for it online, but to no avail. Until now! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your blog post, and including the illustrations! The illustrations have informed my artistic style, even half remembered, they are that beautiful.

Comments are welcome! I'm a shy blog commenter, too, but I do love to read what people have to say. All I ask is, please be kind, to me and to each other.
