Starry, Starry Night...

I won another contest!  And I thought it was impossible for me to win a thing.

The gorgeous blog The Magic Onions sponsored a giveaway for Sarah's Silks.  Somehow we lucked out again.  We chose a beautiful silk scape in "Starry Night."  I have to share a few pictures from our first days with it.

I must add that my four-year-old carries it from room to room.   It's sooooo soft.  A huge thank you to Donni  at The Magic Onions and Sarah at Sarah's Silks.  Please check out them out if you haven't already.

Favorite Tales From Grimm, Illustrated by Mercer Mayer

I apologize for taking so long to post.  The heat has climbed into 106-degree territory.  I blame brain melt.

One way to keep cool is to frequent our favorite bookstores and beloved branch of our local library.  We have made some new friends (Ivy and Bean!!!), and explored new-found interests (books on France and Shirley Temple).  But for now, as requested, here is some more of a fairy tale book we checked out a few weeks ago.

Favorite Tales from Grimm, Illustrated by Mercer Mayer.  Text retold by Nancy Garden.  New York: Four Winds Press, 1982.
Mercer Mayer illustrated several books of fairy tales in the late-1970s/early-1980s.  This book is now out-of-print, and while I haven't made my way through the text entirely, the translation sticks to the original Grimm (i.e. Cinderella's gown comes from birds sent by the tree planted at her mother's grave).  The stories included in the book are:
     "Little Snow White"
     "Rumpelstiltskin"
     "The Two Brothers"
     "Allerleirauh"
     "The Goose Girl"
     "Little Red Cap"
     "The Bremen Town Musicians"
     "Snow White and Rose Red"
     "Fundevogel"
     "Rapunzel"
     "Hansel and Gretel"
     "The Fisherman and His Wife"
     "The Valiant Little Tailor"
     "Little Briar Rose"
     "Thumbling"
     "The Golden Bird"
     "Cinderella"
     "The Six Swans"
     "The Girl Without Hands"
     "Fitcher's Hands"

There is one full-color illustration per story, with small black illustrations (woodcuts?) interspersed throughout:

Here are a few favorites!
"Little Snow White"

"Rumpelstiltskin"

"Little Red Cap"

"The Bremen Town Musicians"

"Snow White and Rose Red"

"Hansel and Gretel"

"Little Briar Rose"

"Cinderella"

"Fitcher's Bird"
By the way, art from this book may be purchased from Mercer Mayer's artist website!

Science Rocks

I'm so excited for the cd Science Fair, which will be released on July 3 by Spare the Rock records.  I love Bill Childs' Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child, which we listen to via iTunes podcasts.  The line-up on the cd looks fantastic, and the cause is a super-worthy one.

The video is Mates of States' cover of "I Am A Scientist," originally by Guided By Voices.

Fairy Day

... has faded to night.

I hope to have better pictures later, but here are a few pictures of our Fairy Day party.  Thanks to an awesome fairy godmother, the party was bigger and more fun-filled than I had planned.

My friend Katie, the fairy godmother.
