Midsummer's Festival

Oh, summer in Kansas.  Why must you be so hot?  Actually, I must admit, June has been rather mild.  Saturday, however, was a bit too warm for me, especially since we spent most of the day outside.  We drove an hour to Lindsborg, Kansas, "Little Sweden U.S.A.," for what has become a family tradition:  the Midsummer's Festival in Lindsborg, then a little excursion to Coronado Heights.

We arrived a couple hours later than usual.  I don't know if and when they performed, but we never saw any folk dancing on this trip!  Instead, we heard lots of music and wandered in and out of shops.  We even wandered around town, away from the festival, just to see new sights.  We were in Lindsborg about two hours, then Coronado Heights for another hour. I then spent another half hour trying to find the Höglund Dugout - what reader of On the Banks of Plum Creek hasn't wanted to see a real dugout before? - but I struck out. I think I was in the right vicinity, but I didn't see any signs or anything. I will plan better and try harder the next time we travel up that way.

Um, this was an amazing candy bar.  Each bite felt enormous, and the nuts were chunky and plentiful.

At the moment I took this picture, these guys were playing Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance."  Prior to that, it was "Air on a G String" by J.S. Bach.

Set up in front of the Anatoly Karpov International School of Chess.  The knights were dala horses.

She has just spied a lizard.

We made it to Shakespeare in the park that night.  By the time we got home, I couldn't wait to shower and defunk.  Oh, and how right-handed am I?  Well, we have spray sunblock, and I did okay until I had to spray my right shoulder with my weak left hand.  I have one patch of sunburn, and it's on my right shoulder.  ha!

Last night, we had a big storm, which cooled things off.  Today, I am sick.  Well, I'm still hoping it's just a bad allergy attack, but I should probably concede defeat...

Happy Summer!  And if you're in the southern hemisphere, happy winter!  (That's my season, you know.)

  1. Wonderful to have such festivals! I remember the dugout from "On the Banks of Plum Creek"! Too bad you missed on some of the folk dances but I am sure the kids loved the trips anyway! Hahaha! I also had a sunburn on my upper arms because it was the most difficult to spray! It's really hot here now and I will be on vacation next week! Wish me luck with the heat!

    1. Well, they've seen the folk dancers every time we've visited Lindsborg, since we always go for festivals. They didn't mind missing them. The music was entertaining! It is POURING right now. Heavy rain through Thursday. Not thrilled, since it will be too wet to mow on Friday probably, so we'll have to mow the day of the fairy party! I'm bummed about not finding the dugout, but I'll keep researching. Good luck with the heat! I know it gets nasty down there. :)

    1. Thanks, dear friend! Be expecting some mail from us, by the way... I want to see a hobbit hole! I still want to see a dugout, come to think of it. I'll have to do more research. Thanks about the picture. We didn't take quite as many pictures this trip, since there wasn't much new to see. I had a couple more places I wanted to go, but I was worried about making it back down here for the play. So I think it's very bad allergies. It is better today, although it just started pouring - it's so dark outside!- making my nose stuffy again. The pollen alert level is high, according to the Weather Channel online. YUCK.

Hoping to get the house ready for the fairy party this Saturday! We won't be able to mow until that day, either. Not cool.
